Peter Salasya: From hawking bicycles to shining in politics now Mumias East MP

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has earned a reputation as one of Kenya’s most vocal and high-performing lawmakers. According to a recent Infotrak survey, Salasya ranked as the 5th best-performing MP in the country, scoring an impressive 61 percent.

His journey into politics is nothing short of inspirational—a story rooted in resilience, grit, and unwavering determination.

Born in January 1989, Salasya grew up in a modest household as the second-last born in a family of seven siblings. He began his education at Shanderema Primary School, sitting for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2005. He later joined Lubinu High School in Kakamega County in 2006, where his academic excellence earned him admission to Egerton University in Nakuru County. There, he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree.

While at Egerton, Salasya’s interest in leadership blossomed. As a first-year student, he vied for the position of Director of Academics, though unsuccessfully. Undeterred, he made a second attempt in his third year, this time running for the position of Vice Chairman in the student union.

After graduating in 2014, Salasya returned to Kakamega and began working as a bicycle hawker, helping a local business sell bicycles. His fortunes later changed when a friend helped him secure a job at Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) as an operations officer and cashier. It was during his time at DTB that his dream of leadership was reignited.

In 2017, he contested the Mumias East parliamentary seat for the first time. Despite his efforts, he finished last among nine candidates, garnering only 254 votes. To make matters worse, he lost his job at DTB and returned home, where he took up a tutoring position at Sigalagala National Polytechnic, earning a modest salary of KSh13,000.

Instead of giving up, Salasya used part of his earnings to begin early campaigns for the 2022 general election. He became a vocal advocate
