Kenyan comedian and YouTuber Oga Obinna recently shared insights into the making of his new track “Namposti,” featuring ‘Dem Wa Facebook,’ which has garnered over 700,000 views on YouTube within just three days of its release.
In an interview with a local media outlet, Obinna revealed that the idea for the song came to him during a road trip. He explained that he was listening to a komba mix when a particular beat caught his attention, inspiring him to create something similar. “We were on a road trip, and I was playing a komba mix. There’s a part where the beat just hits differently, and that’s when I got the idea. I thought, ‘I can do this.’ I always record voice notes when I’m driving, especially when everyone else is asleep. I initially wanted to do a song called ‘Nimechoka Kumficha,’ but later switched to ‘Namposti,'” Obinna shared.
Obinna credited the success of the track to the collaborative efforts of a talented team, despite facing personal challenges, including attending a funeral that had left him emotionally drained. “The song was actually written by four people: myself, Goon, DVD Power, and a producer from Tanzania,” Obinna revealed.
When asked about the production costs of the “Namposti” music video, Obinna disclosed that he spent approximately half a million Kenyan shillings. He explained that the expense was due to filming in multiple locations to give the video a vibrant and dynamic feel. “I spent about half a million. I shot two videos in town,” he said.
The song continues to trend on YouTube and is approaching 1 million views. Obinna and Dem Wa Facebook have demonstrated that content creators can successfully venture into the music industry and thrive.
