My name is Stephen, and I come from Kisumu in Kenya. I grew up with a strong passion for education and a dream of one day starting my own school. I wanted to give children from my community the chance to study in a good learning environment without their parents having to struggle with long distances or high fees.
But like many dreams, mine did not come easy. When I finally managed to open my school, I started with just five students. Every morning, I stood in front of an almost empty classroom and wondered if I had made the right decision.
Running the school was very difficult at the beginning. Parents did not trust me enough, and many thought I was too young to handle such a big responsibility. I struggled to pay teachers and provide the basic needs that would keep the school running. Several times, I thought of closing down completely because it seemed like I was fighting a losing battle.
