Kenyan rapper Ssaru, famed for her chart-topping hit “Kaskie Vibaya,” recently discussed her blossoming career, encounters with criticism, and her light-hearted yet ambitious dowry expectations. Prior to her performance at TRM, the artist engaged in an interview with various bloggers, delving into topics such as the music industry, her personal journey, and her distinct perspective on future marital plans.
In a video posted on Plug TV, Ssaru contemplated the upward trajectory of her career and acknowledged the criticism that some of her songs have faced from certain quarters in Kenya. Undaunted by detractors, she expressed appreciation for the unwavering support of her fans, stating, “Ultimately, the goal was to achieve this objective. Fans can be tough on us, emphasizing the industry’s challenges in pleasing the audience.”
Amidst discussions about her career, Ssaru took a lighthearted turn as she addressed her future plans concerning marriage and dowry expectations. She shared her intentions with her current partner, stating, “Let me tell you, I want to inform my current bae, but of course, I’m not looking to get married right now. I plan to wait a few years, but each year the amount increases—it’s like a billion shillings.”
Drawing a comparison between her dowry worth and that of fellow artist Khaligraph Jones’ home, which he claimed to have spent a billion on, Ssaru argued, “If you can invest that much in a house, then paying for someone like me with a billion is also an issue.” The rapper playfully asserted that her value increases daily, boasting, “I bring more to the table; I am not just a table—I am a complete dining set. In fact, I am the feast that you will enjoy on that dining set!”
