Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s influence over the Mt. Kenya region’s leadership appears to be waning following a recent development where a group of lawmakers from Mt. Kenya East endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their regional leader.
This endorsement, which occurred during a parliamentary group meeting in Embu, marks a significant shift in the region’s political landscape, as local leaders seek more robust representation within the national government.
The MPs, representing Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Meru counties, reached a unanimous decision to have Kindiki serve as the intermediary between their region and the national executive.
Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku made the group’s position public during a press conference on Monday, stating, “As the legislators of Mt. Kenya East, and on behalf of our people, we have unanimously agreed that the link between us and the executive is Prof. Kithure Kindiki.” This declaration firmly established the group’s backing of the Interior CS.
The meeting, which took place at a hotel in Embu, focused on the socio-economic development and political priorities of the region. The leaders stressed the importance of a strong connection with the executive to advance the interests of Mt. Kenya East.
They expressed confidence that Kindiki’s leadership would enhance their region’s prominence in the national agenda.
