A 48-year-old man in Lamu has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Lamu Law Court for the repeated sexual abuse of his 12-year-old daughter. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) reported that John Mureu Bonea committed these heinous acts multiple times between 2020 and August 2022 in Ndeu village, located within Lamu Central Sub-County in Lamu County.
The Lamu Principal Magistrate, Hon. Martin Wachira, delivered his judgment, highlighting that the evidence presented and the arguments put forth by the prosecution convincingly proved the accused’s guilt in the case.
To support their case and assist the court in securing a conviction and an appropriate sentence, the prosecution, led by Prosecution Counsel Rosemary Karanja, called upon five witnesses.
Furthermore, Magistrate Wachira acknowledged the enduring psychological and emotional trauma suffered by the minor as a result of the reprehensible actions of her father.
The ODPP disclosed that the accused and his wife had previously separated, leading to the minor being placed under the care of her grandmother, who would frequently send her to her father’s residence to collect various food items.
Subsequently, when the girl’s grandmother passed away, her aunt took over her care. It was during this period that the young girl bravely revealed the atrocities she had endured at the hands of her father. The ODPP reported that the aunt then took her to the Mpeketoni sub-county children’s office, which subsequently escalated the matter to the local police. Eventually, the case was transferred to the Hindi police station.
