A 16-year-old Form Two student from Mlolongo, Athi River, is making an emotional appeal for help to continue her education at Mumbuni Girls Boarding School after her sponsor unexpectedly withdrew support.
Mercy Mutheu’s Struggles
Mercy Mutheu Wambua, who scored 424 marks in her KCPE, comes from a family of seven. Her mother, who does laundry work for a living, struggles to provide even the most basic needs for the family.
Initially, Mercy’s education was funded by a well-wisher who stepped in after seeing her academic potential. Unfortunately, the sponsor was forced to pull out during the second term of Form Two due to financial hardship. Though the sponsor briefly resumed support, they asked not to be contacted again, leaving Mercy’s schooling in limbo.
Mounting School Fees
Mercy now faces school fees of KSh 8,735 for the upcoming third term. For Forms Three and Four, the fees are KSh 46,035 per term. Payment options include banker’s check, Paybill, or direct deposit to the school’s account.
With schools set to reopen soon, Mercy is growing increasingly anxious. She says she often goes hungry and spends sleepless nights worrying about her future and that of her younger siblings. “I don’t know where to begin,” she shared through tears.
A family friend who has been assisting her younger siblings describes Mercy as an exceptionally bright and dedicated student. However, the cost of supporting the whole family’s education is overwhelming.
How to Help
Mercy dreams of becoming a doctor and is determined to excel in school if given the opportunity to return. Anyone willing to support her can reach out via Electyne Achieng at 0728 054 482.
