Kenyan Comedia 2Mbili: I Scored A- In KCSE But Ended Up Being Employed As A Watchman

If you’re attuned to the lively stand-up comedy scene in Kenya, chances are you’ve come across the name 2mbili. In just a few years since entering the comedy industry, he has become a central figure, bringing his distinctive humor to the forefront of the community.

However, the path to success for 2mbili was not without its challenges. From the harsh life of an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) to the stark reality of being a street child, 2mbili’s narrative is one of resilience and triumph. Today, he stands as a testament to how determination and talent can carve a path to success.

Operating his comedy YouTube channel, aptly titled 2mbili TV, he has found a platform to showcase his comedic skills. Through engaging and entertaining videos, he has built a dedicated following, solidifying his position as a content creator.

WoK had the privilege of catching up with 2mbili to explore his comedic journey and his rise to headlining his own show, the immensely popular Celeb Ride. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation:

Can you share a bit about yourself?
“I am 2mbili – a stand-up comedian, a parent, a content creator, and a TV and radio host.”

How did the pandemic impact you?
“The pandemic, surprisingly, brought about some blessings. Virtual shows and stand-up gigs opened up new opportunities. It nudged me to create a YouTube channel – 2mbili TV. The response has been overwhelming, far exceeding my expectations. What began as an experiment has turned into a wonderful venture.”

Your journey from hardship to success is inspiring. Can you tell us more about it?
“Indeed, my journey wasn’t a smooth ride. Despite performing well in my KCSE, I found myself doing odd jobs and even living on the streets. But I didn’t lose hope. I managed to rise from adversity and provide for my family. It’s a story of transformation and gratitude.”

Your connection with ex-comedian Jalang’o is well-known. Can you shed light on that?
“Jalang’o is like a big brother to me. He supported me when I was struggling, back when he worked at Milele FM. His assistance made a significant impact on my life, and I’m forever grateful for his generosity.”

How has your journey as a comedian been in Kenya?
“The initial days were tough – relying on other people’s shows to make a living. But now, the comedy landscape has evolved. Almost every comedian has their own YouTube channel. This shift has created a community where we celebrate our unique comedic styles. However, stand-up comedy seems to be waning, with fewer events and many comedians exploring acting and other avenues.”

What advice do you have for aspiring comedians?
“My advice is simple: live within your means and focus on your journey. Don’t get caught up in online or societal pressure to flaunt wealth. I support four households through what I have. Comparison won’t get you far – work hard, and you’ll reach your goals.”

2mbili’s journey stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how adversity can be transformed into success through determination, creativity, and a touch of humor. As he continues to ascend in Kenya’s comedy scene, his story serves as an inspiration for many aspiring comedians on their path to stardom.
