Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has firmly denied claims by Azimio leader Raila Odinga that former President Uhuru Kenyatta played a role in the formation of a broad-based government. Odinga had suggested that Uhuru encouraged him to collaborate with President William Ruto to address the ongoing crisis sparked by recent protests, particularly those involving Kenya’s younger generation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kioni rejected Odinga’s assertions, describing them as misleading. He pointed out that Uhuru’s stance on the issue had been clearly outlined in a letter dated July 25. “Uhuru communicated his concerns to Kenyans through his letter on July 25. If you want to understand his position and why Raila’s claims are inaccurate, it’s evident that Raila’s statements are misleading,” Kioni asserted.
Kioni also criticized Odinga’s endorsement of a broad-based government, arguing that it does not address the fundamental issues facing Kenyans. He suggested that the decision to join the government was made some time ago and is only now being revealed.
“It is unwise to involve others in controversies. Once you make a decision, you should not blame others for it,” Kioni advised.
The Jubilee Secretary General reiterated Azimio’s commitment to fulfilling its oversight responsibilities, despite recent shifts in the political landscape. He expressed concern that Odinga’s move to support the government might weaken the opposition’s ability to hold the administration accountable.
“We have advised them not to join the government and to remain with the people, but they have chosen a different path,” Kioni said.
Kioni also noted that with Odinga’s increasing role in the African Union, there is a growing need for new leadership within the Azimio coalition for local politics. Odinga has maintained that the decision to form a broad-based government was intended to foster national unity and security, rather than being a coalition effort.
In response, President William Ruto has called on leaders from across the political spectrum to support efforts to unify the country. He urged those opposed to the broad-based government to prioritize patriotism and the nation’s well-being over personal or political interests.
“This is not the time for disunity or self-serving political maneuvers. We must focus on Kenya’s progress and work together to overcome challenges such as poverty and division,” President Ruto emphasized.
