Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has emerged as an early frontrunner in the 2027 Nairobi governor’s race, particularly among younger voters, according to a new opinion poll.
The survey, conducted by ISS Africa across all 17 constituencies in Nairobi, placed Babu ahead of incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja and other aspirants. The findings show Babu commanding 28.1 percent support, making him the most preferred gubernatorial candidate at the moment.
He is followed by Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) Nairobi patron Irungu Nyakera, who garnered 19.2 percent support. Governor Sakaja, who is seeking re-election, came third with 16.4 percent. Embakasi North MP James Gakuya featured as a distant contender with 11.2 percent, with most of his support concentrated in his home turf.
According to the report, the poll sampled 1,063 registered voters through a random multi-stage process across the capital. Researchers say the results highlight a generational shift in Nairobi’s politics, with younger demographics tilting the scales in favor of Babu.
Among Gen-Z voters aged 18 to 24, an overwhelming 62 percent said they would back Babu Owino for governor. His strongest support base remains Eastlands, where 32 percent of adults aged 25 to 32 also expressed confidence in his leadership.
By contrast, Governor Sakaja’s support largely comes from voters aligned with President William Ruto’s administration, while Nyakera’s backing is rooted in supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his DCP movement.
