How will you fight corruption when you are also the one promoting it? – Babu Owino to Ruto

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto following his intervention in the failed impeachment motion against Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Speaking shortly after the Nairobi County Assembly dropped the motion, Babu accused the Head of State of undermining the fight against corruption by allegedly shielding leaders from accountability.

How will you fight corruption when you are the one promoting it?” Babu asked, directing his remarks to President Ruto.

The outspoken legislator claimed that by summoning Nairobi MCAs to State House and allegedly urging them to protect Sakaja, the President had compromised the independence of the Assembly.

“Mr. President, when you call MCAs to State House and ask them to protect the governor, how then will you end corruption in this country?” Babu posed.

The MP argued that impeachments are constitutional processes meant to check governors and ensure accountability in the management of county resources. According to him, interfering with such processes only emboldens corrupt leaders and weakens devolution.

Governor Sakaja’s impeachment motion had been tabled over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office, but it collapsed after a majority of MCAs withdrew their support following the reported State House meeting.

Babu Owino, known for his fiery remarks, insisted that true leadership must be about upholding the law, not shielding allies.

“Kenya cannot move forward if the same people talking about fighting corruption are the ones defending it,” he added.

His sentiments have sparked heated debate among Kenyans, with some supporting his boldness while others accused him of politicizing the matter.

The clash has once again exposed the deep divisions in Nairobi politics and raised questions about the independence of oversight institutions in Kenya.
