In early February 2026, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), drew strong reactions from Kenyans after he publicly criticised President William Ruto over what he described as the mistreatment of Kenyan youths sent abroad. Speaking at a traditional ruracio (dowry) ceremony in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, Gachagua accused the government of encouraging young people to seek jobs in Russia but ending up exposing them to dangerous conditions instead of real employment opportunities. He claimed that many went with the expectation of factory or driving jobs but were allegedly drawn into military service without proper training, leading to injuries and deaths in the ongoing Russia‑Ukraine conflict. He argued the government should bring these young Kenyans home alive rather than risk their lives in foreign hostilities.
Gachagua’s remarks touched on longstanding tensions between his political faction and the Kenya Kwanza government, of which Ruto is the leader. Since his impeachment in 2024, Gachagua has been one of Ruto’s most vocal critics, attacking the administration on issues ranging from economic policy to social concerns. He has also previously alleged that fertiliser donated by Russia to Kenya was improperly sold instead of being given free to farmers, sparking controversy and government responses on transparency and aid usage.
The criticism from Gachagua has triggered pushback from political allies of the president. Recent statements from Kenyans in support of Ruto underscore broader debates about government labour export programmes, youth unemployment, and Kenya’s diplomatic and economic relations with foreign partners. There is also scrutiny from regulatory bodies, which have cautioned Gachagua to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that might incite public tension.
Overall, the debate highlights deepening political divisions in Kenya ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition voices like Gachagua seeking to challenge the government’s policies and leadership while supporters of the current administration defend its actions and direction. Political analysts note that public discourse has increasingly focused on economic opportunity, governance, and Kenya’s place in the global arena — all issues that resonate strongly with young Kenyans and families affected by migration and employment challenges.
