Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stirred controversy after sending a provocative message directed at former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling for decisive action against President William Ruto. In his remarks, Gachagua suggested that Trump should bypass judicial processes and instead take drastic measures similar to those he claimed were used by the United States in Venezuela.
Speaking during a charged political moment, Gachagua said, “We are appealing to Trump. Do not bother with the court process. Just do what you did in Venezuela. Send a plane, pick that fellow and prosecute him.” The statement immediately triggered sharp reactions across the political divide, with many questioning its implications for Kenya’s sovereignty and respect for the rule of law.
Critics argue that the remarks are reckless and undermine democratic institutions, noting that Kenya’s constitution provides clear legal mechanisms for addressing leadership disputes. Legal experts have also pointed out that suggesting foreign intervention sets a dangerous precedent and contradicts the principles of national independence.
Supporters of Gachagua, however, claim his comments were symbolic and meant to express frustration with what they describe as a broken justice system. They argue that the statement should be interpreted as political rhetoric rather than a literal call for foreign involvement.
The incident has reignited debate over political responsibility and the limits of speech by public leaders. As tensions continue to rise, observers are urging leaders to exercise restraint and focus on lawful, constitutional avenues for resolving political disagreements.
