Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has suffered a major setback after the High Court dismissed his bid to overturn a 12-year prison sentence handed down earlier this year.
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Lady Justice Lucy Njuguna rejected Waititu’s application challenging both his conviction and sentence on corruption-related charges. The former governor had sought to have his punishment reviewed.
Waititu was convicted in February 2025 and ordered to either pay a fine of KSh53.5 million or serve 12 years in jail. The court also barred him from holding political office for seven years after finding him guilty of conflict of interest in a KSh588 million graft case.
Despite this ruling, Waititu’s legal team has persistently fought back, with the latest move seeking to re-amend his petition by introducing new evidence and grounds of appeal. While the court allowed the amendments, it dismissed his effort to have the conviction and sentence quashed.
In July 2025, Justice Njuguna granted Waititu a KSh53 million bond as he awaited the hearing of his appeal, after two earlier applications were rejected. However, he has remained in custody at Kamiti Maximum Prison after failing to meet the strict bond condition, which required a bank guarantee of the full amount.
