Nyandarua Senator John Methu has sounded a stern warning to President William Ruto and his allies over alleged suggestions of extending the presidential term limit. Speaking passionately, the youthful senator said such a move would provoke unprecedented public anger, drawing comparisons with recent unrest in Nepal.
“If William Ruto and his troops dare to extend the term limit even by a single day, what happened in Nepal will look like a joke. Kenyans are angry and already fed up with him; they can’t even stand him for one term. He should stop his spanner boys from inciting an already outraged public with such nonsensical utterances,” Methu declared.
His remarks add to the heated debate surrounding Kenya’s two-term presidential cap, a safeguard enshrined in the Constitution to prevent authoritarian rule. Methu’s blunt statement reflects growing concern among political leaders and citizens alike, who view any attempt to alter term limits as a direct threat to democracy.
The senator further cautioned that Kenyans are already disillusioned with the current leadership due to economic hardships and unfulfilled promises, warning that pushing the boundaries of constitutional governance could spark unrest.
Methu’s warning joins a chorus of opposition voices, including Raila Odinga, who recently described such proposals as selfish and dangerous. The message from both leaders is clear: tampering with presidential term limits would not only erode democratic gains but could also ignite public outrage on a scale Kenya has not witnessed before.
