In a story that has left many people around the world speechless, a 40-year-old Zimbabwean woman has tied the knot with her 23-year-old son after becoming pregnant with his child.
The woman, identified as Betty Mbereko, shocked villagers in Mwenezi, Masvingo, when she openly admitted that she is six months pregnant with her son Farai Mbereko’s baby. Even more controversially, she declared that she has officially married him.
Why She Did It
Betty, a widow for the past 12 years, defended her actions by saying she raised Farai alone, paid for his education, and now deserves to “enjoy the fruits of her sweat.” She even claimed that marrying her son saved her from being forced to marry one of her late husband’s brothers.
Farai, on his part, boldly backed his mother, promising to even clear the unfinished lobola (bride price) his late father owed.
Village Outrage
The shocking confession was made before a village court, leaving elders stunned. Headman Nathan Muputirwa condemned the relationship as a “bad omen”, saying such acts would have attracted the death penalty in the past. The court gave the pair two options: end the affair or leave the village.
The mother and son chose to leave.
