On Thursday, December 12, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking. Quinter Achieng Matengo, a 27-year-old suspected drug trafficker, was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with 2000 grams of Cannabis Sativa (bhang) in her possession.
The arrest followed a collaborative operation involving detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) based at JKIA and staff from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA). During routine luggage screening, KAA staff identified suspicious items in Matengo’s baggage, prompting further investigation by the ANU detectives.
“The detectives intercepted the 27-year-old suspected drug trafficker who was to travel to Doha, Qatar. Upon interrogation, she was escorted to ANU offices where a search of her luggage revealed that she had concealed the drugs inside maize flour packets – not knowing that hawk-eyed detectives would nip her plans in the bud,” the DCI reported.
The concealed drugs were weighed and confirmed to total 2000 grams. The recovered Cannabis Sativa was secured in safe custody, while Matengo was processed and remains in custody pending her arraignment in court.
The DCI reaffirmed its commitment to combating the sale, distribution, trafficking, and consumption of illicit drugs, particularly during the festive season. “The DCI’s resolve in the fight against the sale, distribution, trafficking, and consumption of illicit drugs remains high throughout the festive season and thereafter,” the agency emphasized.
This operation underscores the effectiveness of joint efforts between law enforcement agencies and airport security in curbing illegal activities. The DCI continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as the fight against narcotics intensifies.
