Tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have escalated sharply as long-simmering disagreements between party elder Oburu Oginga and members of the late Raila Odinga’s family burst into the open. Fresh revelations from party insiders indicate that quiet internal battles are now intensifying following Raila’s death, exposing deep divisions over the future of the party.
According to sources close to the wrangles, Raila’s family has allegedly dismissed Oburu’s suitability to lead ODM into its next political chapter. While these tensions have existed for years, Raila reportedly kept them under control.
“That war has been there all along, but Jakom used to manage everything,” an insider revealed, suggesting that Raila’s firm hand prevented disputes from spilling out publicly.
A faction within the Odinga family is said to prefer Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o as the party’s next senior figure. They argue that he has the political weight, credibility, and influence needed to stabilise the party ahead of expected national realignments. This view aligns with earlier concerns raised by Winnie Odinga, signalling broader resistance to Oburu’s rise.
Despite growing speculation, Oburu has downplayed claims of infighting. However, his absence from key condolence visits to the Odinga home in Opoda has raised eyebrows within ODM circles. Speaking in Rongo, he hinted that unnamed individuals were unfairly targeting him, insisting he never campaigned to take over the party’s leadership.
At the same time, attention is shifting to Oburu’s son, Jaoko Oburu, whose increased political activity in Nyanza—particularly meetings with organised community groups—has fuelled speculation about a possible bid for greater influence within the party.
As ODM grapples with the unfolding succession battles, analysts warn that unresolved tensions could significantly shape the party’s future direction, especially at a time when the national political landscape is preparing for major restructuring.
