A teacher working in Japan has gone viral after sharing a heartbreaking experience of racism in her classroom.
The woman, identified online as @gamezu3, relocated from Nigeria to Japan for a teaching job. However, she was left in tears after one of her students insulted her by calling her a “monkey” and using other racial slurs.
In a video she posted, the teacher expressed her pain in Pidgin English, saying:
“This una abroad don tire me! #FixAfrica.”
Her emotional reaction quickly spread across social media, drawing sympathy, outrage, and debate from thousands of users.
Reactions from Netizens
Mrs. A: “Just reply in Yoruba and tell them they are the ones who look like monkeys. I can’t see myself crying over such words.”
Gerald: “You can’t understand racism until it hits you personally. The first time is especially painful.”
Alex: “As a fellow black person, I really feel this. Watching you cry hurts me too.”
Virtue Samuel: “Someone once asked me if I live with lions. I told him I share a bed with my cobra. He never bothered me again.”
Brenda: “That’s why, as Kenyans, we’re working on fixing our country. Africans should focus on building at home instead of running away.”
The incident has once again highlighted the struggles many Africans face abroad, especially in countries where cultural diversity is limited. It has also sparked fresh conversations on the importance of both resilience in the face of racism and investing in Africa to create better opportunities at home.
