Confusion spread across Kenya after unverified reports suggested that schools would remain closed until January 15, 2026. The claims, which circulated widely on social media and WhatsApp, caused anxiety among parents, students, and teachers concerned about potential disruption to the academic calendar.
Parents expressed frustration over the uncertainty, with some questioning whether the government had quietly extended the holiday. Teachers and school administrators also faced numerous inquiries from worried parents seeking clarification.
In response, the Ministry of Education dismissed the reports as false and misleading. Officials confirmed that there has been no official announcement to change the reopening date. According to the 2026 school calendar, learners are expected to return to school on Monday, January 5, 2026, marking the start of the first term.
The Ministry emphasized that any changes to school schedules due to emergencies, extreme weather, or unforeseen events will be communicated only through official channels, including national media, the Ministry’s website, and direct school communications. The public was urged to ignore social media rumors and rely solely on verified sources.
Education stakeholders noted that misinformation about school calendars has become common during holidays, often spreading rapidly online without verification. The Ministry reassured parents, students, and teachers that it is committed to clear and timely communication to maintain stability in the education sector.
