Grief has engulfed the village of Chemnyango in Chesumei, Nandi County, following the tragic deaths of two brothers who were unblocking an underground sewer line.
Weldon Sang, 34, and Davis Sang, 42, lost their lives on Sunday, June 16, while working on the sewage system in Kamngetuny location. According to a report filed at Kapsabet Police Station, the Nandi County Disaster Management team recovered the brothers’ bodies from the sewer, which is located five meters below the surface.
Nandi County Police Commander Dickens Njogu confirmed the incident, stating that the brothers had been hired by a plot owner to unblock the sewer. Commander Njogu explained that Davis was the first to perish in the manhole, and Weldon died while attempting to save him.
“Both are suspected to have died from suffocation and lack of oxygen,” Njogu said. “However, an autopsy will determine the exact cause of their deaths.”
Local businesswoman Caro Muhonja expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that the deceased were not wearing any protective gear when they entered the manhole. “With the foul smell, there was no way they could survive,” Muhonja lamented.
The bodies have been taken to Nandi Hills Level 4 Hospital mortuary.
