Man Behind The Nyandarua Tear Gas Attack Revealed, Leaders Ask For Action (Photo)

A prayer meeting in Shamata Ward, Nyandarua County, turned chaotic when a tear gas canister was hurled at a dais occupied by bishops, clergy, and elected leaders. The incident occurred during an event organized by the area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Hon. Gitau, and Senator Methu. Among those present was Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who appeared to be the primary target. The tear gas landed near him, causing panic and injuring several attendees.

Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba, a Member of Parliament, who was also present, reported that one woman was severely injured and had to be rescued amidst the chaos. The situation left many attendees traumatized, and scores were left nursing minor injuries.

The perpetrator of the attack, identified as Fredrick Gitau Manji, a police officer stationed at Mayland Police Post under Muungano Police Station in Athi River East Subcounty, was apprehended on-site. Surveillance footage captured the officer throwing the tear gas canister, confirming the suspicions of those present.

Hon. Wamuchomba has called for swift justice, urging the Inspector General of Police to ensure the officer is prosecuted. “The police must take this officer to court. Such actions cannot be condoned, especially when aimed at destabilizing peaceful gatherings,” she stated.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with leaders and citizens questioning the motives behind such an attack during a religious and community event. The government is expected to address the issue, given its implications for public safety and respect for religious gatherings.

As investigations continue, the incident has sparked a debate about the conduct of law enforcement officers and the need for accountability to prevent such acts in the future.
