Residents of Kitui were left in shock after a dramatic reunion between a mother and the son she abandoned as a newborn in a pit latrine nearly two decades ago.
The extraordinary story, which has sparked emotional debate across the community, unfolded when the now 18-year-old boy sought out the woman who gave birth to him under tragic circumstances.
According to reports, the woman, who was a teenager at the time, secretly delivered the baby and, overwhelmed by fear and stigma, dumped him in a toilet pit.
Miraculously, the infant was rescued by neighbors after cries were heard, and he was later taken in by a charitable family who raised him as their own.
The young man, now in his final year of high school, recently discovered the truth about his origins.
Determined to confront his past, he tracked down his biological mother in Kitui town. Witnesses say the reunion was tense, with tears flowing as the woman fell to her knees, begging her son for forgiveness.
“I was young, confused, and scared of rejection from my family and community,” the woman reportedly said. “I made the worst mistake of my life, and I have lived with regret every day.”
The son, while visibly emotional, did not immediately respond to his mother’s pleas. Community elders and local church leaders who were present urged reconciliation, noting that forgiveness would bring peace to both.
The shocking reunion has divided opinion, with some condemning the mother’s past actions while others commend her courage to face her son.
The boy’s guardians, who raised him, emphasized that the final decision rests with him.
The story continues to stir conversations about stigma, teenage pregnancies, and the importance of support systems for young mothers in Kenya.
