Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has claimed that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political problems started soon after the 2022 General Election.
According to Thang’wa, President William Ruto allegedly used Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro to weaken Gachagua’s position within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Speaking during a radio interview on Thursday, September 3, Thang’wa said Ruto chose Gachagua as his running mate because he believed the partnership would help him win the 2022 presidential election.
The senator claimed, however, that some Members of Parliament within Kenya Kwanza were not happy with Gachagua’s selection.
Thang’wa argued that although some politicians may not have supported Gachagua personally, Kenyans had elected him alongside Ruto.
He said the disagreements became more serious after the election, with some politicians allegedly questioning Gachagua’s political influence among MPs.
“The problem of Rigathi Gachagua started with Ndindi Nyoro,” Thang’wa claimed.
The senator further alleged that Nyoro was used to undermine the office of the Deputy President.
He pointed to Nyoro’s growing national profile and his involvement in political activities outside his Kiharu constituency as part of what he described as a wider political strategy.
Thang’wa also referred to Nyoro’s alleged association with the “Sky Team”, suggesting that his increased visibility was aimed at creating another centre of political influence within the administration.
The claims come as the political relationship between Ruto and Gachagua continues to attract attention.
Their once-close partnership deteriorated after they came to power together in 2022, eventually leading to Gachagua’s impeachment and removal from office in October 2024.
Gachagua has since become a prominent critic of the Ruto administration and is building his political influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Thang’wa’s latest remarks add to the growing political debate over the events that contributed to the collapse of the Ruto-Gachagua partnership.
