Former Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has said she knew President William Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, would eventually fall out despite working together after the 2022 General Election.
Kariuki said the political differences between the two leaders were not surprising, arguing that their relationship was unlikely to remain smooth until the end of their time in office.
She spoke as political activity continues to increase ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Gachagua now leading the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) after his removal as Deputy President.
Kariuki has since joined Gachagua’s political camp and is expected to play a role in his efforts to strengthen the party’s support, particularly in the Mount Kenya region.
The former CS said the disagreements between Ruto and Gachagua were a result of political differences that became increasingly difficult to manage.
Ruto and Gachagua worked together during the 2022 presidential campaign after forming an alliance that helped them secure victory.
However, their relationship later deteriorated, with the two leaders openly disagreeing over several political and government issues.
The situation eventually led to Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024, ending his tenure as Deputy President.
Gachagua has since become one of Ruto’s leading political opponents and has been building a new political alliance ahead of the 2027 polls.
Kariuki’s remarks add to the growing debate over the events that led to the collapse of the Ruto-Gachagua partnership and the political alliances that could shape the next election.
