Junet Mohamed: “Wanasema vile Raila amekufa nitakuwa political orphan, lakini tuko wengi — hata nitakuwa chairman wao”

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed moved mourners to laughter and tears during an emotional speech as he reflected on the passing of Raila Odinga. Speaking at the funeral ceremony, Junet addressed those who have been mocking him, saying that Raila’s death would leave him politically stranded.

Wanasema vile Raila amekufa, eti nitakuwa political orphan. Lakini hapa nimeona tuko wengi tunalia. Hata nitakuwa chairman wao,” Junet said, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd.

His lighthearted yet emotional comment underscored the deep bond he shared with the late ODM leader. Junet, one of Raila’s closest allies, has been a constant presence by his side throughout many political battles, campaigns, and negotiations.

The remark also captured the mood of many ODM supporters and leaders who are still coming to terms with Raila’s death. By calling himself the “chairman” of the political orphans left behind, Junet humorously acknowledged the void Raila’s absence has created in Kenya’s political landscape.

Mourners, including top leaders from across the country, applauded Junet’s words, praising his ability to mix humor with heartfelt emotion. His statement has since gone viral on social media, with many Kenyans saying it perfectly summed up the sense of loss — and unity — within the ODM family.

Even in grief, Junet’s speech reminded supporters that Raila’s legacy lives on through those he mentored and inspired, and that the movement he built will continue to push forward under the spirit of togetherness.
