The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has seeked to detain a detective from the directorate of criminal investigations over the killing of two Boda-boda Riders.
Sources have confirmed that the IPOA applied to detain the suspect who has been identified as Constable Erick Gitonga Nyaga, a DCI officer, for 21 days over the fatal shooting of two boda boda riders who have been identified as Kennedy Ojuma and Stephen Mwandwa Maweu, along the Thika–Garissa Highway on September 7, 2025.
Witnesses who spoke about the incident revealed that Nyaga, who was allegedly intoxicated after a road accident, is accused of opening fire, killing the two men, and sparking chaos that led to his car being torched.
His firearm, a Duma pistol, was immediately confiscated by the police during his arrest, it was taken in as evidence.
Speaking in court detectives from the IPOA told the Kiambu Law Courts it needs time to conduct ballistic tests, postmortems, and examine the burnt vehicle.
While the defence opposed the detention, arguing Nyaga was cooperating, the office of the director of Public prosecution (ODPP) backed IPOA’s request, warning he could obstruct investigations. Magistrate Jackline Karani who issued a ruling ordered that Nyaga remain in custody until a ruling is delivered on September 9, 2025.
Section of Kenyans who took to their different social media platforms to speak on this called upon the National Police Service to put an end to rogue Boda-boda Operators in different parts of the country.
This was after it was reported that Boda-boda Riders torched more than 2 vehicles in less than a week.
