Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly declared his intention to position himself as the opposition’s presidential flagbearer, insisting he is the best-placed candidate to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 contest.
Speaking during a political gathering, Gachagua said he will persuade fellow opposition leaders and delegates to back his candidacy, arguing that he alone has the political strength and nationwide support needed to defeat the incumbent.
“I will persuade my colleagues to make me the presidential flag bearer because I am the only one who has the capacity to defeat William Ruto!” Gachagua stated confidently.
His remarks have sparked mixed reactions across the political divide, with some praising his boldness while others view it as an early campaign strategy.
Political analysts say Gachagua’s declaration could shake up succession politics and reshape opposition unity talks ahead of the next general election.
As Kenya’s political landscape continues to heat up, all eyes remain on whether Gachagua can rally enough support to become the face of the opposition in 2027.
