President William Ruto has once again sparked heated debate following his latest remarks on how security agencies handled the anti-government protests that rocked the country earlier this year.
Speaking during an interview, the Head of State boldly stated that he has no regrets about ordering police officers to shoot protesters in the leg as a way of maintaining law and order during the chaotic demonstrations.
“I don’t regret giving that order. It was necessary to protect lives and property. Some people had turned protests into opportunities for destruction,” Ruto said.
His comments have ignited mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some defending his tough stance on security, while others accused him of condoning police brutality and violating human rights.
Human rights groups have in the past criticized the government for using excessive force during protests, calling for accountability for victims who suffered injuries or lost their lives.
The President’s latest remarks are likely to reignite debate about how the state handles public demonstrations and citizens’ right to protest.
