A General Service Unit (GSU) officer was fatally stabbed during a confrontation with locals on Monday, August 12, 2024, in the Manyatta slums of Kisumu.
Constable Calvince Ouma Omondi, 24, was reportedly attacked by individuals he knew while on leave from his post at the Turkwel GSU camp in Turkana County. Omondi sustained fatal injuries, including wounds to his chest and neck, which led to his death.
The incident occurred in Kolwa, Kisumu East Sub County, as Omondi was visiting friends in Manyatta. He was in a vehicle escorting a female friend to her home when the vehicle stopped so one of his friends could step outside. During this brief pause, unknown assailants seized the opportunity to attack Omondi.
Despite his efforts to defend his friend, Omondi was stabbed once in the chest and also suffered a neck wound, which resulted in severe bleeding and his subsequent death. Another man was critically injured in the attack and is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
No suspects have been apprehended yet, and police are continuing their investigation. The victim’s body has been taken to the mortuary for an autopsy.
This tragic event follows a similar incident that occurred the previous day, where another police officer, Constable Nicholas Koech, was killed at a bar’s parking lot in the Embakasi area of Kisumu. Koech’s body was found in a pool of blood on the morning of August 10, after he was fatally stabbed in the stomach and chest.
Detectives are actively searching for a group of four individuals believed to be responsible for Koech’s death. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but police are pursuing critical leads. Constable Koech was attacked during a disturbance that erupted as he and others were leaving a Kalenjin Night event at the bar.
