From Grass to Grace: Meet The Kenya’s Youngest PHD Holder Who Scored 235 Marks.

Purity Ngina holds the incredible distinction of being the youngest person in Kenya to earn a PhD. Born and raised in a humble background in Nyeri County, her story is a shining example of resilience, determination, and the power of education. She truly embodies the saying, “There is light at the end of every tunnel.”

Who Is Purity Ngina?

Born in 1990, Purity Ngina grew up in a modest home where basic needs were sometimes a luxury. Today, she serves as the Manager of Research Assessment at the Zizi Afrique Foundation and is a respected academic figure. Her journey to the top was anything but easy, but it proves that no dream is too big when you’re committed to achieving it.

Her Educational Journey

Purity began her education at a local primary school in Nyeri. Due to financial challenges, she often went to school barefoot. In 2002, she sat for her KCPE exams and scored 235 marks—a result that could have easily discouraged her. But instead of giving up, she chose to repeat Class 8 the following year. Her hard work paid off, and she improved significantly, scoring 368 marks.

With this new result, she gained admission to secondary school, where she continued to excel. She performed well in her KCSE and earned a spot at Egerton University. There, she pursued and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Chemistry.

Her passion for learning didn’t stop there. Purity went on to earn a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics from the same university. She later joined Strathmore University as a lecturer and received funding to pursue her PhD in Biomathematics. At just 28 years old, she became Kenya’s youngest PhD holder—a remarkable feat.
