Irene Nekesa, popularly known as Mama Yao, has broken her silence with bold revelations about leaving Kevin Bahati and Diana Marua’s household.
The Bungoma-born nanny turned online personality says she has no regrets about her decision to part ways with the celebrity couple, despite years of working closely with their family.
Irene recalled joining the Bahatis when their firstborn was just five months old, juggling long hours and little pay at the beginning. Contrary to online rumors that she earned KSh100,000 a month, Irene admits her earnings were far more modest—at one point just Sh800.
Her motivation, she says, was always her son Joshua. And when the right moment came, the decision to leave was mutual and respectful. “I worked hard… we have a lot of love for each other, but it was time to move on,” she revealed.
Life after leaving the Bahatis hasn’t been smooth. Irene has faced tough days, even sleeping on the floor in her small bedsitter before well-wishers came through with support. Some critics labeled her a “beggar,” but Irene clapped back, saying her struggles are real and she’s not ashamed of fighting for her independence.
Now, she’s channeling her energy into YouTube and content creation, proudly branding herself as “Irene Nekesa, the best chef.” Asked whether she’d ever return to the Bahatis even for double her pay, Irene was firm: “I can never do that… I have moved on with my life.”
