China Square re-opens after it’s closure

China Square, a retail outlet that had established its first store at Kenyatta University’s Unicity Mall in January 2023, had been accused of providing a wide range of goods at low prices, which lured many customers and ignited debate among local business owners and politicians. This led to a public outcry on the internet and threats from Moses Kuria, the Trade Cabinet Secretary, who accused the company of unfair competition. As a result, the retail outlet was temporarily shut down on February 26, 2023.

On February 27, 2023, the closure was extended indefinitely due to concerns about public safety and false information. However, after multiple discussions between the Kenyan government and the Chinese community in Kenya, China Square was approved to resume operations.

The Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce (KCCC) released a statement expressing their delight at the good news and thanking the Kenyan government for helping to make it possible for the Chinese community to conduct business and support Kenya’s growth and development initiatives. The KCCC also called for the equal and fair treatment of all firms across the board to ensure a favorable business environment for everyone and to foster friendly ties based on mutual trust and benefit.

The KCCC said it will continue to foster collaboration between Kenya and China in promoting investments, trade, and tourism between the two countries. With the reopening of China Square, it is expected that the retail outlet will continue to provide goods at affordable prices while contributing to the growth and development of Kenya.
