Fresh cracks appear to be emerging within the opposition after Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, a close ally of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, launched a pointed attack on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
Wambua claimed that Matiang’i is being used to create confusion within the opposition ranks at a time when unity is seen as crucial. According to the senator, many leaders in the opposition support Kalonzo as the preferred flagbearer in a future presidential contest, alleging that Matiang’i is the only major figure resisting that push.
In his remarks, Wambua further stated that leaders from the Ukambani region are firmly behind Kalonzo’s presidential bid. He suggested that if Matiang’i is unwilling to align with that position, he should reconsider his role within the coalition framework.
The comments highlight growing tensions as opposition figures begin positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle. Questions around who should carry the coalition’s presidential ticket have long been a sensitive issue, often exposing regional interests, personal ambitions, and strategic calculations.
Political analysts observe that such public exchanges could either force internal negotiations or deepen divisions within the opposition bloc. With President William Ruto and his allies consolidating their own political base, any perceived fragmentation among opposition leaders may have significant implications for future contests.
As the political chessboard continues to shift, unity, compromise, and coalition management are likely to remain central themes in shaping Kenya’s next chapter.
