Investigators are continuing to piece together the final moments of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo following a fatal road crash at Karai along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Fresh details from the scene and official records have deepened public interest in the circumstances surrounding his death.
Jirongo died in the early hours of Saturday after the Mercedes-Benz he was driving was hit by a speeding passenger bus bound for Busia.
The collision occurred at a well-known black spot where serious accidents have been recorded repeatedly over the years.
Witnesses who rushed to the scene reported seeing smoke rising from the wreckage moments after impact.
There was no visible movement inside the vehicle, an observation that suggested the driver died instantly.
First responders attempted to access the car but found the doors jammed and were forced to break in.
They later confirmed that Jirongo was alone and had slumped over the steering wheel.
Further findings revealed that the vehicle involved in the crash was not registered in Jirongo’s name.
Records from the National Transport and Safety Authority indicate that the car belongs to Smart Cars Limited, a Nairobi-based motor vehicle import company.
Despite this, Jirongo had been using the vehicle for some time prior to the crash.
Surveillance footage from a nearby fuel station captured the moments before the collision.
The footage showed the car entering the station briefly without refuelling before rejoining the highway.
Seconds later the bus appeared and struck the vehicle, leaving no chance for evasive action.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations continues to review all evidence as Lugari and the nation mourn the loss of a once influential political figure whose death remains under close scrutiny.
