Uganda has increased the salaries of its soldiers. The lowest ranking officer will now earn 828,000 shillings per month

The Ugandan government has announced a salary increment for its military personnel, bringing relief to soldiers across all ranks.

According to the new figures, the lowest-ranking officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) will now earn UGX 828,000 per month, equivalent to approximately KSh 30,000. The adjustment is part of ongoing efforts to improve welfare and motivation within the armed forces.

The move has been welcomed by military personnel and their families, who say the pay hike will help them better meet living expenses and support their households. Analysts note that improved compensation is likely to enhance morale and retention within the UPDF.

Observers also say that such adjustments in military pay are increasingly common across East Africa, as governments seek to balance operational effectiveness with personnel welfare. Uganda’s step comes amid growing attention on the need for competitive remuneration to attract and retain disciplined, skilled soldiers.

The government has not yet revealed whether higher-ranking officers will receive proportional increases, but officials assure that all adjustments are part of a comprehensive review of military pay structures.
