88 students affected by fire incident at JKUAT hostels

The management of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has confirmed that a fire at the university’s main campus in Juja on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at approximately 4:00 AM affected 88 students. The fire impacted the second floor of Hall 5, one of the student hostels.

In an official statement, the university expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging the disruption caused to the students residing on the second floor of the hostel. “We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate fire, which has affected around 88 students,” the statement read.

The fire resulted in the loss of personal belongings and other valuables. While a few students sustained minor injuries, they have since been treated and discharged from the hospital. Currently, three students are under observation at the university hospital.

JKUAT further emphasized the unfortunate nature of the incident and reassured the affected students that support services, including counseling and alternative accommodation, have been arranged.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, though investigations led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Juja are underway. The university has committed to providing updates as the investigation progresses.

The management reassured all students, parents, guardians, and stakeholders that the safety and security of JKUAT students is a top priority. In response to the incident, the university has strengthened security and surveillance measures around the campus to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Patrick Amunavi, JKUAT’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, conveyed the university’s commitment to maintaining the semester schedule and continuing normal university programs and activities. He also expressed sincere gratitude to the first responders, including the JKUAT student fire marshals, Kiambu County firefighters, university staff, and the Juja community, for their swift action in mitigating the fire’s impact.
