Trevor Ombija: From Matatu Conductor to Kenya’s Most Sought News Anchor

Trevor Ombija, renowned for his work on Citizen TV and Ramogi TV, has firmly established himself as one of Kenya’s premier prime-time news anchors.

His exceptional proficiency in both Dholuo and English, coupled with his outstanding interviewing skills, distinguishes him as one of the nation’s top multilingual journalists.

Despite his calm demeanor when delivering the news, Trevor’s journey to success was far from smooth.

In an interview, he reflected on his humble beginnings before entering the media industry, revealing that he once worked as a matatu (minibus) conductor in Nyakach, Kisumu.

“I used to be a matatu conductor in that area (Nyakach) for a long time. Stopping at the bus stage and interacting with boda boda operators and matatu drivers is natural for me because I was one of them,” he said.

Trevor’s media career began after he graduated from the University of Nairobi with a degree in journalism and media studies.

He started as a Junior Assignment Desk Editor at the China Central Television Africa Bureau, now known as CGTN.

Trevor remained in this role until July 2013, when he moved to Nation FM and became a radio news anchor.

His career continued to rise when, in August 2014, he joined NTV, where he worked as an associate producer and news anchor until 2018.

In 2018, Trevor joined Royal Media Services, where he currently holds a significant position.

He has taken on important duties at Royal Media, including anchoring the Monday 9 PM newscast known as Monday Report.

Additionally, Trevor is a prominent morning show host on Day Break and a key figure on Ramogi TV.

In 2020, he was honored with the Head of State Commendation (HSC) award by President Uhuru Kenyatta in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the media sector.
