Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah is mourning the death of his sister, Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya, who passed away after a long illness.

Wamukoya died on August 21, 2026, while receiving treatment at Mater Hospital in Nairobi. She had spent several decades working as a teacher and was remembered for the impact she made on the lives of many students.

Omtatah described his late sister as a strong, kind and devoted woman who remained committed to her family throughout her life.

The senator expressed deep sorrow over her death and asked for strength and comfort for the Musita and Okoiti families as they mourn her loss.

News of Wamukoya’s death has attracted messages of condolence from several prominent Kenyans.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga sent his condolences to Omtatah and his family, wishing them comfort and strength during the difficult period.

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga also condoled with the senator, describing Omtatah as the “People’s Senator” and expressing sympathy following the loss.

Members of the public have also shared messages of support for the senator and his family.

Wamukoya’s body is currently at Delights Funeral Home in Bungoma County, where family members, friends and mourners have been paying their respects.

The cortege is scheduled to leave the funeral home on Saturday, September 5, ahead of her final burial in Kabula.

The death has brought together family, friends and political figures who continue to send messages of comfort to Omtatah during the period of mourning.
