The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku over remarks he allegedly made during a political gathering in Kajiado West.

The commission said it is investigating statements attributed to Lenku during an event at Ewuaso Oonkidong’i on August 22, 2026.

Lenku has been directed to appear before the NCIC at Britam Towers in Nairobi on September 17 at 2 p.m. to assist with the ongoing investigations.

According to the commission, the remarks under investigation concerned political parties fielding candidates from outside the Maasai community for elective positions in Kajiado, Narok and other areas associated with the Maasai community.

The NCIC is mandated to promote national cohesion and peaceful coexistence among Kenya’s different communities. It also investigates conduct that may amount to ethnic discrimination, hate speech or other forms of intolerance.

The summons was issued under provisions of the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

The commission has warned that failure to honour the summons could lead to further legal action, including the possible issuance of a warrant of arrest.

The investigation comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the NCIC increasingly monitoring statements by political leaders that could potentially heighten ethnic tensions.

Lenku will now have an opportunity to respond to the allegations when he appears before the commission.

The NCIC is expected to review the governor’s statements and other relevant information before determining whether any further action is necessary.
