Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has met with former President William Ruto ally and evangelical leader Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, sparking fresh political interest ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i shared details of the meeting on Thursday, September 3, saying Wanjiru had visited him for prayers, encouragement and advice.
He thanked the bishop for her visit and praised the role of faith leaders in guiding the country as Kenya prepares for another election.
The meeting comes at a time when political leaders are actively building new relationships and exploring possible alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
Matiang’i, who is also Jubilee Party Deputy Leader and a presidential aspirant, has in recent months increased his involvement in opposition political activities.
Wanjiru’s meeting with Matiang’i has therefore attracted attention because of her previous links to Ruto’s political camp.
The bishop is a well-known religious and political figure who previously served as Starehe MP. She has been involved in Kenyan politics for many years and has at different times worked with Ruto’s political camp.
However, neither Matiang’i nor Wanjiru announced any political agreement or confirmed that they had formed an alliance following their meeting.
Matiang’i instead described the encounter as a visit centred on prayer, encouragement and fellowship.
The meeting comes as politicians from different camps continue to hold consultations and build relationships ahead of the 2027 election.
Opposition leaders have been seeking to unite their supporters, while politicians who previously worked with the Kenya Kwanza administration are also reassessing their political positions.
The appearance of Matiang’i and Wanjiru together is therefore likely to fuel further speculation about the political realignments that could emerge before the next General Election.
For now, the two leaders have not publicly announced any political partnership, leaving their meeting open to interpretation as the 2027 political contest gradually takes shape.
