Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina has reported a significant financial loss following the violent raid on his supermarket by enraged protestors. The incident, which occurred on June 25, 2024, was fueled by the MP’s controversial ‘Yes’ vote on the now withdrawn Finance Bill 2024, endorsed by President William Ruto.
According to reports, movable stock valued at Sh. 450 million and essential equipment such as bakery shelves worth Sh. 100 million were among the losses incurred, as stated by the MP in an interview with The Standard. The aftermath saw scavengers salvaging remaining metallic stands from the damaged premises.
Footage captured protestors looting various items from Chieni Supermarket, including mattresses, fridges, and cookers. The deliberate targeting of Chieni Supermarket was linked directly to its ownership by MP Njoroge Wainaina, who supported the contentious legislation.
The unrest wasn’t limited to Chieni Supermarket alone. Similar acts of vandalism and looting affected other supermarkets across different regions. Notably, Naivas Supermarket in Naivasha was also thoroughly emptied, while a QuickMart branch in Nairobi faced targeted attacks.
Furthermore, the turmoil extended beyond supermarkets, with businesses like Satellite Forex Bureau in Nairobi’s Central Business District also falling victim to stoning and damage amidst the chaotic protests.
