Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i has said he only needs 120 days to campaign across Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Matiang’i explained that he does not have to campaign every day because he can cover several counties within a single day.

Speaking on Wednesday, September 9, he said he could visit three counties in one day and still reach all parts of the country within 120 days.

The former CS said his campaign strategy would involve holding rallies in different counties as he works to build his national support ahead of the presidential election.

Matiang’i also compared the plan to his experience while serving as Education Cabinet Secretary. He recalled travelling to different counties during examination periods, where he sometimes visited more than three schools in a single day.

He said the experience showed him that it was possible to cover large areas within a short period.

His remarks come amid criticism from some political leaders who have questioned his level of activity on the ground.

Matiang’i has occasionally held rallies in different parts of the country, but critics have pointed to gaps between some of his public engagements.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also urged opposition leaders to increase their grassroots activities, arguing that elections are won by connecting with voters across the country rather than relying mainly on meetings between political leaders.

Matiang’i and his team have recently increased their grassroots activities, including engagements in Kisii, Nyanza and Bomet.

Some politicians and aspirants from Kisii and Nyamira have also pledged to support his presidential campaign by mobilising voters in his home region while he focuses on building support elsewhere.

With the 2027 election approaching, Matiang’i now says a carefully planned 120-day campaign would be enough to take his presidential message to voters across Kenya.
