“Alienda Wapi huyu” ‘Githeri Man’ Asks Kenyans to Help Him Buy a Car

Martin Kamotho, famously known as Githeri Man, shot to fame during the 2017 general elections after he was photographed calmly eating githeri while queuing to vote.
The photo instantly went viral, making him a national sensation and earning him recognition from former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Fame and Broken Promises

At the height of his popularity, companies scrambled to associate with him—using him in adverts and pledging gifts ranging from land to financial support. While some promises materialized, many faded once the hype died down.
One genuine reward he still holds onto is a piece of land in Ngong, given to him during his viral peak.

Life After the Spotlight

Today, however, the fame has all but disappeared. Kamotho lives in Kayole, struggling to make ends meet. Far from the glamour of his viral stardom, he admits life has become tough.

In a heartfelt appeal, he called on well-wishers to support him—whether with financial aid or job opportunities. Despite his age, he maintains that he can still work if given the chance.

“Mimi naeza taka mnisaidia badala kuenda mguu nipate kagari niendange nako,” Kamotho pleaded, expressing his wish for stability.

A Lesson on Fleeting Celebrity

His story is a sharp reminder of how quickly viral fame can fade. For Kamotho, the spotlight was bright but short-lived—leaving him to navigate life as an ordinary Kenyan, long after the cameras stopped flashing.
