A Canada-based Nigerian doctor, identified as Zo, has shared how some of his friends mocked his decision to marry his school girlfriend more than two decades ago, only for their marriages to later end in divorce.
The doctor opened up about his experience in a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, explaining that he got married before travelling abroad and was already expecting a child with his wife at the time.
According to Zo, some of the friends he met after travelling to the United States questioned why he had chosen to marry so early. They even advised him to leave his marriage behind and consider marrying a nurse in America, claiming it would offer him better financial opportunities.
He recalled how their comments made him question his decision at the time.
“Some of my friends I met there were like, ‘Why did you get married? You could have come over here so we can arrange a nurse for you. You already made a mistake,’” he recalled.
Zo said he had married his school girlfriend and, despite the pressure from his friends, eventually decided to remain committed to his wife.
He explained that although their words made him think about his decision, he reminded himself that his wife was his wife and chose to stay faithful to his marriage.
Years later, the situation appears to have turned out differently from what his friends had predicted.
Zo said he recently contacted some of the same friends to ask about their families and wives. However, he was surprised by the stories they shared with him.
According to him, the friends who had once mocked his marriage had also married nurses in America, but their marriages had eventually ended in divorce.
“They’ve all divorced the nurse wives they married,” he said.
Zo noted that while his friends believed he had made a mistake 22 years ago, he is now preparing to celebrate another anniversary with the same woman he married back then.
He said he will soon be celebrating his 23rd wedding anniversary, describing the situation as an unexpected turn of events.
His story has sparked reactions online, with many people praising him for standing by his decision despite being pressured by his friends.
The doctor’s experience has also renewed conversations about marriage, peer pressure and the importance of making major life decisions based on personal convictions rather than following what others believe is best.
What his friends once described as a mistake has now grown into more than two decades of marriage.
