Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has alleged that the assault he suffered at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23, was a premeditated attack. According to Salasya, the assailants took advantage of his well-known passion for football to stage the incident during the Harambee Stars versus Gabon match.
The attack has sparked widespread outrage, particularly from Nuru Okanga, a staunch supporter of Azimio leader Raila Odinga. Okanga condemned those attempting to justify the violence and voiced concerns over the potential escalation had Salasya’s security team been present.
“Use your education wisely. It was fortunate that Salasya did not have his security detail with him; otherwise, this would have been a different story,” Okanga remarked.
He went on to allege that the mastermind behind the assault is a fellow supporter of Odinga, accusing this individual of fueling tribal divisions and planning additional attacks. Okanga claimed that he himself was a target, alongside an event organized by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. He asserted that an informant within the suspect’s inner circle had provided him with concrete evidence of these plans. He urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and law enforcement agencies to act swiftly, warning that failure to do so could lead to further unrest.
Reacting to the incident, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi denounced the attack on Salasya, describing it as a violation of democratic principles. He called on authorities to ensure that those responsible face justice.
As investigations continue, there is an increasing demand for political tolerance and unity to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
