Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has called for measures to prevent international institutions from taking control of Kenyan banks, arguing that the country should strengthen its own financial institutions.
Speaking in Nairobi on Monday, August 17, Nyoro said Kenya’s banking sector remains profitable and should be supported to grow into stronger regional and continental players.
He questioned why foreign institutions should be allowed to take over local banks when Kenyan financial institutions have the potential to expand beyond the country’s borders.
Nyoro said regulators and policymakers should create an environment that allows Kenyan banks to become bigger and compete successfully across Africa.
He argued that having strong local banks would help keep more wealth within Kenya while also increasing the country’s influence in the regional financial sector.
The lawmaker’s comments come amid renewed debate over foreign ownership in Kenya’s financial industry and the need to strengthen local businesses.
Nyoro also called for deliberate policies that would encourage the growth of Kenyan-owned financial institutions rather than allowing them to be easily absorbed by international companies.
His remarks form part of his wider economic views as he outlines his priorities and political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Nyoro’s proposal is likely to fuel debate about foreign investment, ownership of strategic businesses and how Kenya can build financial institutions capable of competing across Africa.
