Budalangi Member of Parliament Raphael Wanjala has sparked debate after urging President William Ruto to consider bringing back former powerful Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i to head the Ministry of Education.
Speaking during a public event, Wanjala questioned the President’s recent remarks indicating his desire to have a leader from the Kisii community serve in the Education Ministry. The outspoken legislator said that if that is indeed the case, then Dr. Matiang’i — who previously served with distinction in the same docket — would be the perfect choice.
“Now that President Ruto wants a Kisii in the Education Ministry, why can’t he bring back Fred Matiang’i?” Wanjala asked, adding that the former CS had demonstrated unmatched competence and discipline in public service.
Wanjala praised Matiang’i for his firm leadership and reforms during his tenure as Education CS, noting that his efforts helped restore order and credibility in Kenya’s education sector. He also described Matiang’i as one of the most efficient Cabinet Secretaries in recent history, citing his no-nonsense approach and commitment to accountability.
The remarks have triggered mixed reactions online and across the political divide. Some Kenyans supported the idea, saying Matiang’i’s return would be a great boost for the education system, while others argued that the government should give new leaders a chance to serve.
Fred Matiang’i, who served under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has maintained a low profile since leaving office in 2022. His name, however, continues to feature prominently whenever discussions about competent and reform-minded leaders arise.
Wanjala’s call has now reignited debate about inclusivity, merit, and experience in President Ruto’s Cabinet appointments.
