Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Secretary for Planning and Economic Affairs Peter Mbae has told President William Ruto that former President Uhuru Kenyatta should not be treated as his main political opponent ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mbae made the remarks during a radio interview on Thursday, September 17, 2026, as political exchanges between Ruto and leaders linked to the opposition continue to intensify.

According to Mbae, Ruto’s recent criticism of different opposition figures suggests that the President is paying close attention to the question of who could emerge as the opposition’s preferred presidential candidate.

Mbae argued that Uhuru is no longer an electoral candidate and should therefore not be at the centre of the political contest.

His comments come a day after DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua also urged Ruto to focus on Kenyan voters rather than former President Uhuru. Gachagua said the 2027 political contest would ultimately be decided by voters.

Ruto has recently criticised Uhuru over his continued involvement in opposition politics. During his Nyanza tour, the President questioned Uhuru’s political role after leaving State House.

The debate comes as political parties and movements continue preparing for the 2027 General Election, with different opposition figures positioning themselves and discussions continuing over whether a single candidate will be selected to challenge Ruto.

Mbae’s remarks add to the growing political debate surrounding Ruto, Uhuru and the emerging opposition alliances ahead of the next election.
