The Nation Media Group (NMG) has appointed Julie Gichuru and five other directors to its board following the exit of representatives linked to the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.

The changes were announced after the Aga Khan Development Network completed the sale of its controlling stake in NMG to the French media group Vivendi.

Gichuru, a former NMG journalist and media executive, returns to the company’s leadership at a time when the media industry is undergoing significant transformation.

The other newly appointed directors are expected to bring experience in media, finance, technology, governance and business management to the board.

The appointments are part of efforts to strengthen NMG’s leadership and support the company’s strategic direction under its new ownership structure.

NMG operates newspapers, television and radio stations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

The company has faced changing audience habits, declining traditional advertising revenues and increased competition from digital platforms.

The new board will be expected to oversee the group’s response to these challenges while protecting its position as one of East Africa’s leading media organisations.

Gichuru previously served in senior roles at NMG and has held leadership positions in the media and communications sectors.

Her appointment is likely to attract attention because of her long association with the company and her experience in broadcast journalism and corporate leadership.

The board changes follow a major ownership transition that ended the Aga Khan’s long-standing association with NMG.

The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development had been the company’s controlling shareholder for decades.

NMG said the appointments would support continuity, accountability and the implementation of its long-term business strategy.

The new directors will work with the existing management team as the company continues to expand its digital operations and adapt to changes in the media market.
